Missoula City Guide – Shopping
Downtown |
|
Missoula's vibrant and attractive downtown has just about everything you need, as well as a bunch of stuff you probably don't but might want to buy anyway (and isn't that the very definition of good shopping?). There's a solid mid-range department store, The Bon Marche (110 N Higgins Ave; 406/542-6000), high-end clothing boutiques like Laurel Creek Clothing and Gifts (117 W Front; 406/721-5368) and J. Elaine's (140 N Higgins; 406/728-4326). For outdoor and sporting gear stores, check out The Trailhead (corner of Higgins Ave and Pine St; 406/543-6966) and Pipestone Mountaineering (101 S Higgins Ave; 406/721-1670): both specialize in climbing, kayaking and general backcountry gear. Grizzly Hackle (215 W Front; 406/721-8996) is the place to go for fishing tackle and gear. There's a plethora of gift shops selling fun, inexpensive stuff: Ovilla Antique and Gift Emporium (115 W Front St; 406/541-7527) has an eclectic selection of antique dishes, great rhinestone jewelry, hats and gourmet chocolates. |
| Art Galleries |
|
Missoula's art galleries remain open late the first Friday of every month for the gallery walk. Try Art Fusion (111 N Higgins Ave, 406/544-3596) for fun and funky local art—pottery, paintings and jewelry—in a wide range of prices. The cooperatively run Missoula Artists' Shop (306 N Higgins; 406/543-0975), is the best place to find regionally made arts and crafts ranging from photographs to hand-made puppets, pottery, jewelry and glassware. Check out Sutton West Gallery (121 W Broadway; 406/721-5460) for higher-end pieces like paintings by Missoula watercolorist Kendahl Jan Jubb and lithographs by Livingston artist Russell Chatham. Next door, the Dana Gallery (123 W Broadway; 406/721-3154) specializes in fine-art photographs. |
| Rockin
Rudy's 237 Blaine; 406/542-0077 |
|
With its huge selection of CD's and cards, espresso, fun T-shirts and clothes, jewelry, candles, toys, soaps, and imported tchotchkes galore, Rockin Rudy's is hands-down Missoula's hippest shop. It's the one must-see for teen-agers and anyone else who loves to browse for hours on end. Be forewarned, though: it's almost impossible to leave without buying something. |
Farmers Market for
Summer of 2007
Missoula Downtown Association; 406/543-4238
| You can find great
local produce, baked goods and flowers at Missoula's Farmers
Market, at the north end of Higgins by the old Northern
Pacific Train Depot. But the Farmers Market is more than a
mere shopping excursion: it's a quintessential Missoula
experience, where Missoulians come to socialize with their
neighbors over lattes and croissants, listen to live music
(anything from drumming to fiddles) and celebrate their
community. You'll see everyone you know, and if you don't
know anyone, you will by the time you leave. Just two blocks
south, you'll find all manner of arts and crafts at the
People's Market, an offshoot of the Farmers Market, on
Pine Street between Higgins and Pattee.
Open from mid-May to mid-October every Saturday from 8:30am - 12:00pm and in July and August, Tuesday evenings from 5:45 to 7:15pm. More Info on Farmers Market |
